EdgeEver is an open-source notes and knowledge base workspace that keeps the classic three-pane productivity layout of tree view, note list, and editor while adding AI agent integration and open data architecture. It supports rich text and Markdown editing, multi-device sync, browser clipping, and deployment either within Cloudflare's free tier or through Docker on a VPS, NAS, or home server.
Key Features
- Classic three-pane workspace with resizable panels, rich-text and Markdown source toggle, focus mode, and custom CSS.
- Companion AI sidebar with BYOK support and native MCP for external agents, plus ACP connections to local coding agents on desktop.
- Official clients across Web, macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android, plus a browser web clipper for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.
- Native diagramming for mind maps, flowcharts, and architecture diagrams, with Mermaid and LaTeX support.
- Data ownership through standard SQLite, lossless ZIP backup, and Markdown plus attachment export and import.
- Flexible deployment on Cloudflare's free tier or one-line Docker installation on a VPS or NAS.
Use Cases
- Personal note-taking and knowledge management with fast full-text search, tags, and offline-first multi-device sync.
- A self-hosted Evernote or Obsidian alternative for users who want open data and no device limits.
- AI-assisted research and writing where agents read, organize, and create notes through MCP or ACP.
- Migrating existing note libraries from Evernote, Memos, Notion, or flomo using the provided migration guides.
Getting Started
- Try the public live demo, but note that it resets daily and is not intended for private content.
- Deploy on Cloudflare with an AI agent by forking the repository, creating the required D1 and R2 resources, creating a Worker, setting the administrator password secret, verifying the deployment, and enabling the update workflow.
- Deploy with Docker by running the GitHub-hosted one-line installer, which pulls the latest image, generates an administrator password, and starts EdgeEver with Docker Compose.
Deployment & Requirements
- Cloudflare deployment requires a Cloudflare D1 database named edgeever, an R2 bucket named edgeever-resources, a Worker named edgeever, and the runtime secret EDGE_EVER_AUTH_PASSWORD, preferably at least 32 characters.
- Cloudflare R2 requires activating an R2 subscription and adding a payment method before use, even for workloads expected to remain within the free allowance.
- Docker deployment supports amd64 and arm64 and uses SQLite with local files or S3-compatible attachment storage.
- The iOS app requires an Apple ID from outside mainland China.
Before You Adopt
- License: AGPL-3.0. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
- The public demo is not suitable for private data because it resets daily and restores sample notes.
- Cloudflare R2 requires an active subscription and payment method before use.
- Docker installations update automatically each day by default.
- Using the iOS app depends on having an Apple ID from outside mainland China.
