Overview

magpie is a menu bar app and local gateway that lets you choose the model each AI coding agent uses. It lists installed agents and their current models, rewrites the relevant config key when you pick another model, and routes requests through 127.0.0.1:3425 so any agent can use any provider's model.

Key Features

  • Menu bar panel lists each installed AI agent and its model; click a value to change it and magpie rewrites only that agent's key in its config file.
  • One local gateway at 127.0.0.1:3425 translates OpenAI Chat Completions, OpenAI Responses, Anthropic Messages, and Google Gemini APIs, including streaming, tool calls, and reasoning.
  • Surgical config edits preserve comments, ordering, and indentation in settings.json, config.toml, opencode.jsonc, or config.yaml; writes are atomic.
  • Signed-in subscriptions from Claude Code, Codex/ChatGPT, and GitHub Copilot become providers that other agents can use without copying keys.
  • Provider presets and custom vendors are configured by pasting a key; model lists are fetched from the vendor and models.dev, and keys stay in magpie.
  • Profiles snapshot every agent's settings, and routing groups can spread requests across multiple accounts or models with failover, rate-limit, and quota handling.

Use Cases

  • Run Codex on DeepSeek, Claude Code on Kimi, and Gemini CLI on GLM from one menu bar picker.
  • Give OpenCode, Pi, Goose, or other agents access to a Claude Pro/Max or ChatGPT plan without pasting credentials into each agent.
  • Centralize vendor keys and base URLs in one local gateway so agents do not hold provider credentials.
  • Route requests across multiple accounts or keys to handle rate limits, quotas, and failover.

Getting Started

  • Download the desktop app for Windows or macOS, or install from the terminal with the provided install script.
  • Add a provider with magpie provider add deepseek sk-...; a preset needs only the key, and local servers such as Ollama need none.
  • Assign models with commands such as magpie codex deepseek/deepseek-v4-pro, magpie claude moonshot/kimi-k3, or magpie gemini zhipu/glm-5.3.
  • Use magpie tui for the terminal app, magpie ls to list agents and their models, and magpie save work followed by magpie use work for profiles.

Deployment & Requirements

  • macOS 11 or later on Apple Silicon or Intel.
  • Windows 10 or later on x64 or ARM.
  • Linux with GTK 3 and WebKitGTK 4.1 on x86-64 or ARM64.
  • Local gateway runs at 127.0.0.1:3425; desktop app uses the system webview and is under 15 MB, with a 7 MB terminal-only build.

Before You Adopt

  • License: MIT. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
  • API keys must be added directly in magpie; it does not read keys from shell environment variables.
  • Vendor keys are kept in magpie and are not exposed to the agents it configures.
