Overview

OpenWorker is an open-source, local-first AI coworker for desktop. It runs on your machine, connects to everyday tools such as Slack, GitHub, email, calendar, and files, and carries tasks through to finished deliverables. It ships specialist security coworkers first and checks in before consequential actions.

Key Features

  • Runs locally on your computer as a desktop app with local secret storage for model keys and connector tokens.
  • Bring your own model: use cloud API keys, open-weight providers, or run fully local with Ollama.
  • Works across 25+ connectors including GitHub, Slack, Jira, Notion, Linear, HubSpot, Outlook, Gmail, and Google Calendar, plus terminal, local files, and MCP tools.
  • Governed actions include approval gates, standing rules, audit trails, hard floors, and an optional auto-approve reviewer that escalates uncertainty.
  • Produces finished deliverables such as documents, spreadsheets, reports, web pages, fix pull requests, and Slack thread replies.
  • Supports scheduled automations and Slack mentions with full transcripts.

Use Cases

  • Security review: scan code and dependencies for real risk and propose fixes that are re-scanned and diff-reviewed before approval.
  • Cloud posture: audit cloud configuration against common misconfiguration classes and draft the remediation plan.
  • Incident triage: gather context across tools, draft timelines, and prepare reports for security or ops incidents.
  • Everyday work and standing automations: prep customer calls, create documents, manage calendar and Slack, and run recurring briefs or reports.

Getting Started

  • Download the macOS app for Apple Silicon. macOS 12+ builds are signed and notarized and auto-update.
  • Windows 10/11 x64 builds are listed but not yet code-signed, so SmartScreen will warn while signing is in progress.
  • Open the app, add a model key, or point it at Ollama, then ask for something real.
  • Run from source with Python 3.10+, Node 20+, and the Rust toolchain via rustup. Bootstrap the Python virtual environment, start the local agent server, and run the UI.

Deployment & Requirements

  • Desktop app: macOS 12+ on Apple Silicon or Windows 10/11 x64.
  • Source run: Python 3.10+, Node 20+, and Rust toolchain via rustup for the desktop shell.
  • Model access: bring a supported cloud provider API key or run local models via Ollama.
  • Tool connections: one-click or manual connections, with MCP tools supported for additional integrations.
  • Optional sandbox: NVIDIA OpenShell for agent shell and file tools.

Before You Adopt

  • License: MIT. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
  • OpenWorker is in open beta, so users should expect active polishing of rough edges.
  • Windows builds are not code-signed, so SmartScreen warnings are expected until signing is completed.
  • Although OpenWorker is local-first, an optional cloud account brokers OAuth handshakes for connectors.
  • Users pay model providers directly for API usage.
  • Auto-approve reviewer verdicts are judgments, not guarantees; hard floors and the audit trail backstop them.
