Filee is a free, open-source file converter for Windows, macOS and Linux. It opens a donut of compatible formats at the cursor when you hold a key and drag files onto it. Conversions run on the PC, so files are not uploaded, and Filee can convert images, PDFs, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HWP/HWPX, e-books, video, audio, archives and other supported formats.
Key Features
- Drag-and-drop conversion: hold a modifier key, drag files, and drop them on a format in the donut that opens at the cursor.
- Supports 244 formats in 17 categories, including images, vector graphics, PDF, documents, HWP/HWPX, spreadsheets, presentations, text, data, e-books, video, audio, subtitles, archives, CAD, 3D models and fonts.
- Runs locally and works offline; files are not uploaded to a server.
- Converts Word, Excel, PowerPoint and HWP/HWPX files without Microsoft Office, Hancom Office or LibreOffice for built-in formats.
- Batch conversion processes files in parallel, a failed file does not stop the rest, and presets can merge output into one PDF or ZIP.
- Command line and watch folders support automated conversions with presets, JSON output and exit codes.
Use Cases
- Convert HEIC, MOV, DOCX or other files to common formats such as JPG, MP4 or PDF without uploading them.
- Convert DOCX, XLSX, PPTX or HWP/HWPX documents to PDF or other formats without Office or Hancom Office.
- Batch-convert mixed folders and merge documents into a single PDF or pack files into one ZIP.
- Automate recurring conversions with watch folders or the filee command in scripts and scheduled tasks.
Getting Started
- Download Filee from the Releases page.
- On Windows 10/11, run Filee-<version>-win-Setup.exe, or unzip the portable ZIP and run Filee.exe.
- On macOS or Linux preview builds, unpack the package and run ./install.sh.
Deployment & Requirements
- Windows 10/11 (64-bit) is the stable release; macOS 14+ and Linux x64/ARM64 builds are previews.
- Windows installation requires administrator rights once; a portable ZIP is available if you cannot install programs.
- Optional engines for formats such as video, audio, older Office files and rare e-books can be selected during installation or downloaded later in the app.
- On Linux, drag gestures require an X11 session; on Wayland, use the drop zone and the right-click action.
Before You Adopt
- License: MIT. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
- macOS and Linux builds are previews; macOS requires a one-time Privacy & Security approval because the app is not notarized, while Linux drag gestures need X11.
- Some formats rely on optional engines that are downloaded separately, including FFmpeg, LibreOffice, Calibre, Ghostscript and Pandoc.
- Conversions are local, but Filee uses the internet to download optional engines and check for updates.
