Worktrunk is a CLI for Git worktree management designed for parallel AI agent workflows. It makes worktrees as easy as branches: worktrees are addressed by branch name, paths are computed from a configurable template, and commands that take a branch also accept the path of the worktree it is checked out in. It includes core commands plus quality-of-life features for working with many parallel changes.
Key Features
- Core commands make worktrees as easy as branches: wt switch, wt list, wt merge, and wt remove.
- Hooks run commands on create, pre-merge, post-merge, and other workflow points.
- LLM commit messages generate commit messages from diffs.
- The merge workflow can squash, rebase, merge, and clean up in one command.
- The interactive picker browses worktrees with streaming CI status, diff, log, PR, and comment previews.
- Copy-on-write build caches let multiple worktrees share target, node_modules, and similar directories on APFS, btrfs, and XFS.
Use Cases
- Running multiple AI coding agents in parallel on the same repository, each in its own Git worktree.
- Creating a branch and worktree and launching Claude in one command with wt switch -c -x claude feat.
- Checking status across worktrees with wt list and cleaning up a worktree and branch with wt remove.
- Following either a PR workflow or a local merge workflow, then cleaning up.
Getting Started
- Install with Homebrew on macOS or Linux using brew install worktrunk, then run wt config shell install.
- Alternatively install with Cargo using cargo install worktrunk, then run wt config shell install.
- Create and switch to a new feature worktree with wt switch --create feature-auth.
- List worktrees with wt list; remove a completed worktree with wt remove.
- For parallel agents, use wt switch -x claude -c feature-a -- 'Add user authentication'.
Deployment & Requirements
- Supported installation paths include Homebrew on macOS and Linux, Cargo, Arch Linux pacman, Conda or Pixi, and Winget on Windows.
- On Windows, Winget installs Worktrunk as git-wt because wt conflicts with Windows Terminal’s command.
- Shell integration is installed with wt config shell install and is needed for commands that change directories.
Before You Adopt
- License: Other. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
- Worktrunk relies on shell integration for commands that change directories.
- Copy-on-write build cache sharing is documented for APFS, btrfs, and XFS filesystems, so other filesystems may not get the same no-build, no-copy behavior.
