Overview

Kimi Code is a developer-focused intelligent coding service in Kimi membership, based on Kimi's flagship models. It provides code reading, file editing, and command execution through desktop, CLI, and VS Code extension products, and lets subscribers use an API Key to connect Kimi Code model capabilities to third-party development tools and platforms. The CLI can also run as an AI coding agent in the terminal.

Key Features

  • Desktop, CLI, and VS Code extension clients are available; other editors can connect through the CLI's ACP protocol.
  • Code reading, file editing, command execution, and result verification can be completed in conversation.
  • Built on the K3.1 Pro series models with up to 1M context and standard and high-speed model options.
  • The API is compatible with OpenAI and Anthropic protocols and can be configured in Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex, and other third-party tools.
  • The CLI supports video input, MCP configuration, plugins and Agent Skills, subagents, and lifecycle hooks.
  • The CLI can drive sessions in ACP-compatible editors such as Zed and JetBrains.

Use Cases

  • Open a local project in the desktop app and use AI conversation to complete code reading, file editing, command execution, and result verification.
  • Use the CLI in a terminal to let AI complete development tasks autonomously, and continue sessions in IDEs such as Zed or JetBrains through ACP.
  • Use the VS Code sidebar for code completion, file editing, web search, and automation tasks.
  • Configure an API Key in third-party tools such as Claude Code, OpenCode, and Codex to use Kimi Code model capabilities.

Getting Started

  • Choose Kimi Code Desktop, Kimi Code CLI, or Kimi Code for VS Code and install it using the corresponding official method.
  • After installing an official client, sign in with a Kimi account; no manual API Key management is needed.
  • After installing the CLI, run kimi in the terminal and use /login on first use to sign in to the Kimi Code platform.
  • For API access to third-party tools, create an API Key in the Kimi Code console and configure the corresponding Base URL and API Key.

Deployment & Requirements

  • Kimi Code Desktop supports macOS, Windows, and Linux.
  • On Windows, install Git for Windows before first CLI launch; if Git Bash is installed in a custom location, set KIMI_SHELL_PATH to the absolute path of bash.exe.
  • For API access to third-party tools, create an API Key and configure either the Base URL or the full Endpoint as required by the tool.

Before You Adopt

  • License: MIT. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
