MCP for Blender is an open source Blender addon and MCP server that lets an LLM control Blender through a socket-based connection. The AI can write Blender Python, create and modify objects, apply materials, inspect results through multiple views or renders, and search or import assets. The project is a community plugin and is not affiliated with the Blender Foundation.
Key Features
- Two-way communication between Blender and an LLM through a socket-based server
- Create, modify, and delete 3D objects in Blender
- Apply and modify materials and colors
- Visual verification through viewport, camera, multi-angle, wireframe, X-ray, animation-strip views, and renders
- Code execution where the AI writes Blender Python directly
- Asset and model generation using Poly Haven, Sketchfab, Poly Pizza, Tripo, Hyper3D Rodin, Hunyuan3D, and Meshy
Use Cases
- Prompt-assisted 3D modeling and scene creation
- Applying and modifying materials and colors
- Letting the AI inspect and verify its work with multi-angle, camera, wireframe, X-ray, animation-strip views, and renders
- Importing assets or generating 3D models from supported sources
Getting Started
- Run uvx mcp-for-blender setup if uv is already installed; otherwise use the one-line installer for macOS/Linux or Windows.
- Select which MCP clients to configure; setup adds a blender entry and saves a .bak of each changed file.
- Fully quit and reopen the AI app, open Blender, and ask it to build something.
- For manual setup, install uv, add the MCP server to the client, run uvx mcp-for-blender install-addon, enable Interface: MCP for Blender in Blender preferences, and start or connect the server.
Deployment & Requirements
- Blender 3.0 or newer
- Python 3.10 or newer
- uv package manager, using the official installer rather than pip install uv
- An MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code, OpenCode, or Antigravity
- Docker can host only the MCP server; Blender still runs on the host. On Linux, use host networking and set BLENDER_HOST to localhost.
