Open CoDesign
Open CoDesign is an open-source desktop AI design tool that turns prompts into prototypes and slides locally. It supports bring-your-own-model providers, local-first files, design skills, and HTML, PDF, PPTX, ZIP, and Markdown export.

Open CoDesign is an MIT-licensed desktop application for AI-assisted design. It turns a prompt into a polished prototype, slide deck, or marketing asset using the model provider you choose, while keeping designs, prompts, and settings on local disk. Version 0.2.0 introduces Agentic Design with workspace-backed sessions, permissioned local tools, lazy skills, and DESIGN.md design systems.
Key Features
- Bring your own model: Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, SiliconFlow, local Ollama, ChatGPT subscription login, or an OpenAI-compatible relay.
- Local-first workspace: designs, prompts, and settings stay on disk, with sessions stored in JSONL and generated sources kept in real workspace files.
- Agentic Design in v0.2: each design is a long-running session with a real workspace where the agent can read, edit, run permissioned tools, and preview its work.
- Twelve built-in design skill modules plus project-level SKILL.md support, with DESIGN.md storing brand values and design tokens.
- Region-level comments, AI-tuned sliders, instant switching among recent designs, and responsive desktop, tablet, and phone previews.
- On-device exports to HTML, PDF via local Chrome, PPTX, ZIP, and Markdown.
Use Cases
- Generate landing pages, dashboards, pricing pages, pitch slides, mobile app screens, chat UIs, calendars, blog articles, receipts, portfolios, and email designs from prompts.
- Refine generated artifacts through inline comments and AI-emitted sliders, then export to HTML, PDF, PPTX, ZIP, or Markdown.
- Prototype connected local app journeys with navigation, shared records, validation, empty states, and success states.
- Use a preferred API provider, ChatGPT subscription, or local Ollama for local-first design work without subscription lock-in.
Getting Started
- Install via Homebrew Cask on macOS, Scoop on Windows, or direct downloads for macOS, Windows, and Linux from GitHub releases.
- On first launch, add a provider by signing in with ChatGPT, pasting an API key, or selecting local or keyless Ollama or an OpenAI-compatible gateway.
- Pick one of fifteen built-in demos or describe your own prompt; a sandboxed prototype appears in seconds.
- Refine with comments, sliders, and local files, then export the result.
Deployment & Requirements
- Runs on macOS 12+ (Monterey or later), Windows 10+, or Linux with glibc 2.31 or later.
- Requires one API key, ChatGPT subscription sign-in, or local Ollama.
- PDF export uses your local Chrome.
- Credentials are stored in ~/.config/open-codesign/config.toml and the ChatGPT OAuth token store under the app config directory.
Before You Adopt
- License: MIT. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
- Installers are not notarized or Authenticode-signed yet, so macOS and Windows may show security warnings.
- PDF export depends on the local Chrome installation.
- No account is mandatory and telemetry is off by default.
- Generated artifacts are interactive prototypes, not production services; data and service actions are simulated and state may reset on reload.
