tuios is a terminal window manager and multiplexer that runs inside an existing terminal. It provides tiled panes, floating windows, workspaces, a persistent daemon for sessions, access to sessions on other machines, and agent-aware status and Inbox features for coding agents.
Key Features
- Tiled panes and floating windows with BSP, master-stack and scrolling layouts, plus a dock and sidebar.
- Nine independent workspaces and a modal interface inspired by vim, with window and terminal modes.
- A daemon keeps panes and programs running when you detach or close the terminal; sessions can be reattached locally or over SSH.
- Hosts and remote sessions let you add another machine once and attach to its sessions or run individual panes there.
- Coding agents in panes report whether they are working, waiting, done or errored, and the Inbox collects approvals, questions, mail, errors and finished turns.
- Scripting and automation through a JSON control protocol, send-keys, capture-pane, wait-for, tape scripts, hooks and a CLI.
Use Cases
- Run several coding agents side by side while keeping their states and pending approvals visible in one terminal.
- Keep long-running builds, tests or agent sessions alive after closing the terminal and reattach later.
- Work across several machines by attaching to remote sessions or placing individual panes on another host over SSH.
- Automate or replay terminal workflows with tape scripts, hooks and the JSON control protocol.
Getting Started
- Install with Homebrew using brew install tuios.
- Run tuios; it starts the daemon if it is not running and attaches you to a session.
- Use n for a new window, i or Enter for terminal mode, Ctrl+B then Esc for window mode, and Ctrl+P for the command palette.
- Optionally try the guided browser tour before installing.
Deployment & Requirements
- A terminal with true color support; kitty graphics and sixel support are recommended, such as Ghostty, Kitty or WezTerm.
- Building from source needs Go 1.26.8 or newer.
- Pre-built binaries are available for Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD and OpenBSD; Docker images are also published.
Before You Adopt
- License: MIT. Review its terms before using, modifying, or distributing the project.
- The project states there is no token or presale, so offers involving a tuios token should be treated as unofficial.
- Sixel image passthrough is labeled experimental and currently lacks pixel-level clipping.
- The kitty text sizing protocol is experimental and has known issues with scrollback and window repositioning.
